Experiencing Purity in a Modern World

Mascari, Brooke. August 27th, 2024

Purity can be physical, mental, and spiritual.

On the physical level, there are things such as bathing, wearing clean clothes, and a nice tidy home that are the equivalent of purity. Mentally, it could be choosing to think loving, compassionate thoughts over harsh, critical thoughts. Spiritually speaking, purity could look like openhearted devotion to the Divine.

Purity is a word and concept that is not used often in our current world. However, purity in mind and body is what makes up the essence of overall complete health.

Let us take a few moments and dive into the characteristics of purity.

Let us ask ourselves:

Is my diet healthy and pure? Do I consume toxic food often?

Am I putting impurities into my body too often?

What impressions am I taking in through my senses like the programs I choose on TV or social media?

Are my relationships supporting purity? Or are they creating chaos and confusion? Is it time I edited my circle of friends?

And when it comes to our environment:

How is the air I breathe? Do I spend too much time in a city proliferating with impurities and toxins in the air? Is it time to take a trip to the country to breathe in and be refreshed by nature?

How are the noise levels? Do I make space for peace and calm?

What is the amount of stress my environment might be creating in me?

Maharishi Mahesh Yogi states,

“The thread of love has woven the garment of our life. Let us keep it spotlessly clean and pure.”

Let us learn to love our body; treat it with respect and favor things that keep it pure.

Let’s imagine ourselves as a young, innocent, pure child. This child is still within you! Welcome the innocence, simplicity, and lightheartedness.

Now imagine a beautiful flawless diamond; the diamond of your heart. Let us welcome our beauty, resilience, and purity while also letting it shine from within.

Purity begins in the heart and manifests in our actions. It requires a daily commitment. It means being constantly alert to making conscious choices; and being uplifting in speech and actions.

Are you willing to be accountable for your purity? Is your mind clear and uncluttered? Or filled with disturbing emotions like anger, greed, criticism, and judgment?

Whenever those thoughts or emotions arise, let’s see if we can introduce a thought of the opposite nature. Thoughts such as love, compassion, generosity, forgiveness, and peace.

The American Clergyman Phillips Brooks says,

“Be such a person that lives such a life that if everyone were as you and every life was such as yours, that this life would be paradise.”

This paradise is already here, within the Divine in all of our hearts! God-given and God-ordained. However, we often allow it to become covered over and hidden from the world.

Practices that allow the spiritual Divine to be tapped into such as meditation, prayer, devotion, and love are like a broom that sweeps the heart clean. Freeing it from all impurities and making it an immaculate home for the Divine to live and be evident.

When the home is pure, the mind becomes blissful, and the body becomes filled with light as we see the Divine in everything.

Just as the Gospel of Matthew tells us,

“Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.”

The ego is always lurking, however. Spiritual pride can become one of the biggest obstacles on our journey to purity. Let us make a silent resolve to remain pure, honest, sincere, and without malice.

It’s said that fasting purifies the body, acceptance purifies the mind, and silence purifies everything.

Let us make a few moments for silence in our minds today. Perhaps taking a few moments to reminisce on the inner child, the diamond of our heart.

No matter what may have happened in our lives up until this moment; it is never too late to choose purity in our diet, thoughts, lifestyle, and habits.

Thank you for joining us for a few moments to contemplate the powerful topic of purity! Blessings on your journey to perfect health and happiness,
